Makers of Walis Lasa
---

One of the oldest sources of income in the province of Bataan, particularly in the town of Abucay is the making of the Walis Lasa (household brooms made from a grass called Lasa or Tiger Grass). The industry is concentrated in Barangay Mabatang where one can find many of these Walis Makers. The product is "exported" to nearby towns and provinces and it is a fact that even the very popular Walis that tourists buy from Baguio City as souvenirs of Baguio are actually made from Abucay! Please take note of the first photo above ... it shows Baguio City.
Walis Lasa is similar to the more popularly known Walis Tambo. Very similar as it is, the makers say that Lasa is the better material as it is stronger than the Tambo. It may just be that those brooms that are sold as "1st Class" in many parts of the country are actually Walis Lasa and may very well have come from Abucay.
The Lasa is not a produce of Abucay! ... It would be interesting to note that the Tiger Grass (Lasa) does not even come from Abucay, nor from Bataan for that matter. The makers say the grass comes from Bicol. The grass grows in Bicol and is processed in Bicol and is "exported" to Abucay.
